Dead or alive, my bet is that they were all would-be CIA finks! They were picked by US intelligence as a "patsy cast" so to speak... It's so obvious! The best way to contrive a coverup with real, plausible characters was for US intelligence to frame several of ITS OWN, disposable Arab informants! That's the best way to bring the loose ends to a minimum: their case officers knew about their recent whereabouts, people they met, their backgrounds/profiles were kept up-to-date, they just were the perfect patsies to be cast as "the 911 hijackers" --after they got bumped off, that is....
