<<<Freedom was one of the unquestioned values we all shared 30 years ago.>>>

I don't think things have changed that much over the past 30 years. Of course you could always get some smart AH that will argue over anything, but for the overwhelming majority of people anywhere, they will side with freedom - even though many will not have sufficient understanding of the concept.

<<<I question whether a large chunk of us now hold that as a core cvalue. It's more an ornament that can be easily discarded if it jeopardizes the latest collectivist pipe dream.>>>

Just be careful who you throw into that large chunk of people and try to define (more for yourself)the collectivist pipedream that this large chunk of people might subscribe to.

I personally am not a terrific role model for anyone. I am much nearer the age of death than of birth. But I am optimistic. I am convinced that evil will not triumph. I am absolutely certain that evil will destroy itself. Even though I believe that we are largely ignorant and there is so much that we do not know and understand, we know enough where we can live in peace and harmony and that life can be terrific.

I know that things can not get better by trying to kill all the bad guys before the bad guys kill us. Even all the good guys have different ideas on who the bad guys are. Not even considering what the bad guys think.

I agree though that bad guys make things difficult and that 911 make things infinitely more difficult - but basic values have not changed.

The real danger is for some of the good guys to turn into bad guys.

Bottom line though is that I am very optimistic. The Internet will make it nearly impossible to hide the truth. The truth will win out. Evil in part is to hide the truth or to obfuscate it. That is why it is not good to see things as us versus them. Everybody on our side is good and everybody on the other side is bad. Things rarely ever work out that way.
