He's under no obligation to take a pay package that makes his personal taxes high. In fact he owes it to himself and his family to take his pay in a way that creates the least amount of tax liability.

I don't recall the numbers or the qualifiers but we pay huge amounts of money to Senators for the rest of their life. Hell....I don't even think they pay SS on that income.
