I find it hard to understand how the Gospels could have been written to gain Gentile support for a Jewish uprising.

Judea was an independant entity with their own god within the Roman empire. Many non-Jews, especially those who felt themselves to not have influence in the Roman temples, admired or longed for a God of their own. The Jesus movement allowed an affiliation, if not a full membership as part of the chosen people of a particular god. The basic message was "support us and you can be part of the club".

I think this movement started out as support for autonomy in Judea, not for the full fledged uprising. That was a later development when circumstances got out of control, as circumstances are wont to do. Ultimately it had little to do with the uprising or the Jews and developed it's own reason to be.
