Though I'm not too well read on the issue, I think we defend Israel because of what it represents.
My understanding is they are an isolated refuge of Holocaust survivors and descendants. They are surrounded by the same hateful religious fanatics that would gladly like to see them wiped out just like the World Trade Center was. To ignore and not defend would almost be condoning the ways of Hitler.
