Aluminum wiring has been outlawed around here because of it's low melting point, and has been blamed for causing house fires in the past. Aluminum does not conduct electricity as well. Also, the wire is not as flexible. Aluminum is cheaper though.

Substitutions are always possible, but if forced, these substitutes are usually second best, and at times costlier.
