Market losing conviction on Fed rate hikes
By Rex Nutting
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Mildly weaker U.S. economic data and some reassuringly patient words from Federal Reserve officials have reduced the market's expectations about Fed rate hikes in the coming months. Participants in the federal funds futures market at the Chicago Board of Trade still believe the Fed will raise rates by a quarter point by its August meeting and by another quarter point in November, but the odds of a third rate hike by the end of the year fell below 50 percent. The chance of a rate hike at the May meeting is priced at 7 percent and 30 percent for the June meeting.
