It's only important if you want to protect your computer from as many internet baddies as possible. Go to Windows Update and let them scan your computer and you can read about all the vulnerabilities you are open to by not installing them.

A perfect example is the story Patricia posted earlier today. If that person had installed the updates, he wouldn't have been vulnerable to the worm he got.
