Vote-grab U: Prof. Kerry’s empty promises
GIVING FURTHER evidence that he hasn’t a single original idea, Sen. John Kerry on Monday copied Franklin Roosevelt and a litany of other Democrats in mimicking the New Deal by offering yet another federal giveaway to a bloc of Americans whose votes he needs to become President.
This time the group receiving the offer of a federal handout was college students.
“When he ran for President, Roosevelt promised America a New Deal, where everyone would ‘shoulder our common load,’” Kerry told students at the University of New Hampshire. “This week, I’ll be unveiling a Compact with the Next Generation — your generation — that says we’re going to bring back the basic bargain at the heart of America: If you’re willing to do right by America, then America’s willing to do right by you.”
That compact would involve . . . um . . . well, Kerry didn’t exactly specify. He said, vaguely: “This compact will bring the greatest expansion of national service in history and we’re going to ask you to step up to the plate to do what’s right for America — to go out into your communities and teach children, be mentors, build homes, and protect America.”
He didn’t say how much it would cost, how much work would earn a four-year degree, or how he would pay for it, other than by eliminating “tax cuts for the wealthy.” But he’s already promised that money to pay for every other giveaway he’s offered, including tax cuts for the middle class and subsidies for health care and prescription drugs. He must really know how to stretch a dollar.
Where were the math majors in the Whittemore Center crowd? Wasn’t anyone around to say, “Hey, this doesn’t add up?” Maybe they were laughing too hard when Kerry, in the same speech, compared himself to Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. He can stretch a dollar and a metaphor.
Kerry blames rising college tuition on President Bush’s “tax cuts for the wealthy,” which any non-biased economist would tell you is bunk. Tuition costs have risen steadily for decades, in large part fueled by federal and state subsidies that keep colleges from having to price their services at competitive rates.
College students are a proudly independent lot. Were they aware that Kerry was promising them the moon, which he knows he can’t deliver, in a cynical ploy to collect their votes? If not, they may just find out the hard way — when President Kerry announces that he will either renege on his pledge, or push a massive tax increase to fund it.
