I agree, I do not buy a stock simply because it has a great chart.
But, I will not buy a stock that has an awful chart. For me, technical analysis is a tool to keep me from BAD SITUATIONS. Even a neophyte can pick a few good winners, but he will also pick lots of bad ones. The easiest way to make money in stocks is to avoid the bad ones, that may seem good on a fundamental basis. TA helps me do this.
The first thing I do when I research a stock is look at the 5-year chart. James Dines of the Dines letter once said:
"Don't think, look!"
