Here, I contribute to an open discussion on foreign policy -- an effective foreign policy is essential to national security. Neither our military leaders nor our intelligence officers made the decisions that have delivered us into the mess in Iraq -- these were political foreign policy decisions and they were made by politicians. For a democracy to work, we must hold politicians accountable for their mistakes -- mistakes made more objectionable because of the misconduct by which they were made -- and we need an honest assessment of what is wrong, how we got into this mess, and a way out of it that does not inflict any further harm to our national security.
