I remember when I was in third or fourth grade walking home from school with a couple of friends. There were a bunch of older girls (fifth or sixth grade) circled around another girl and mocking her because her father had come home drunk and sexually assaulted her (it was a couple of years before I knew exactly what the terminology meant, but I knew it was pretty damned bad). The victimized girl was in a pretty bad way, furious and ashamed and feeling betrayed because the people she had confided in were tormenting her.

Put that against calling someone a fag or a spic or a fatty on the playground ... everyone suffers a great deal in life, there isn't a person you know or will ever know who will not endure unimaginable suffering during their lifetimes, but you have to keep it in perspective.
