Kids seem hardwired to develop a "pecking order," and among boys this generally is accomplished through proficiency in sports, willingness to risk physical injury, and willingness to fight.

It is all completely irrevelant ten years later, when we develop new ways to determine the pecking order (annual income, beauty/youth of wife, golf game).

Many who sucked at the early pecking order game excel at the later game, and vice-versa, which explains why many men in their thirties and forties drink a lot of beer.

I doubt there is any way around it, at least not within our lifetimes.
