What really makes it hard for him I guess are the things he can't control. So far he told me this year is starting out great but they could really use a little rain. If he gets the rain it's great. The fields grow and I guess he has just about enough land to graze his cattle without buying 100% of their feed. If it doesn't then that expense comes right off the top of his profits.

One other thing that nature really screws him with is hot/cold. I guess the cows learn to adjust to one or the other but the quick changes raises hell with them.

I know this is all just the tip of the iceberg but if I were you I wouldn't let it scare me away for just one cow. I'm sure there have got to be people near you in that great state of Texas to tell you what you need to know. Hell even here in Connecticut there are three people within 5 minutes of me that still raise cattle. I'm sure they would be more than happy to tell me what I needed to know.
