VERITAS Software Continues to Lead $3.6 Billion Market for Non-Array-Based Storage Management Software

New Study Confirms VERITAS' Leadership in the 2003 Worldwide Non-Array-Based Storage Management Software Market

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004-- VERITAS Software Corporation (Nasdaq:VRTSE - News) announced today its continued leadership in the storage management software market. According to a new market research report from analyst firm Gartner(1), VERITAS led the $3.6 billion non-array/switch-based software market with 26.1 percent of market revenues in 2003. The report also confirms VERITAS' ongoing leadership in two segments of the market, core storage management and backup and recovery software, and demonstrates VERITAS' strong growth in the replication and storage resource management markets.
"VERITAS continues to gain traction in the storage software market because companies want heterogeneous software that is truly hardware independent, allowing them to more efficiently manage growing data volumes while reducing costs," said Jeremy Burton, chief marketing officer, VERITAS Software.

The 2003 results represent a repeat of VERITAS' prior strong performance. In addition to its leadership in the overall non-array-based storage software, VERITAS has retained its leadership or shown significant growth in the following segments:

Core Storage Management: VERITAS was No. 1 in the core storage management category in 2003, with 31.4 percent share of a broad product category that includes file systems, volume management, disk utilities, access and path management and emerging technologies not captured in other segments of the Gartner report. On the strength of online storage software that helps companies reduce storage costs and run applications faster, VERITAS gained market share over its next closest competitor in this core technology segment.
Backup and Recovery: VERITAS NetBackup(TM) and Backup Exec(TM) software constituted more than 45 percent of the 2003 worldwide market for backup and recovery on distributed platforms, a Gartner definition for all operating systems outside of mainframes. VERITAS data protection software helps to ensure the recovery of critical business data, with solutions that span from the desktop to the data center.
Replication and Storage Resource Management: VERITAS also showed strong growth in the replication and storage resource management market segments. Replication software license revenues grew 61 percent from 2002 to 2003, while storage resource management software grew more than 22 percent in that same timeframe.
