MJ, one of the saddest and at the same time most noble things about our soldiers when they go to war, is that they ALWAYS believe that the "mission is greater than any one of them and death may be part of the struggle for liberty."

It's true for soldiers on both sides of every conflict at the beginning of every war. It's only when they've "been there and done that" that some of them see it a little differently. To expect that our young men and women would view it objectively and have a comprehensive view of politics and world affairs at the inception of their service overlooks the fact that very few of them are educated in world matters through experience or schooling.

When they get to places where their lives and those of their buddies are hanging in the balance, that's when they fight for the most basic of instincts; survival and a tribal sense of loyalty and love for their fellow soldiers.

It's a tragic and wonderful snapshot of what makes us human. That's why we glorify it and write books about it, and that's why people like Bush, who was not of the character to participate himself, nonetheless strives to be a part of it.
