If you want to talk about mistakes and hubris, here's a portend from the mouth of babes:

"Few nations have been given the advantages and opportunities of our own. Few have been more powerful as a country, or more successful as a cause. But there are risks, even for the powerful. 'I have many reasons to be optimistic,' said Pericles in the golden age of Athens. 'Indeed, I am more afraid of our own blunders than of the enemy’s devices.' America’s first temptation is withdrawal... ( quoted by GWB on Novenber 19, 1999)

It is apparent that George never understood the nature of the mistake by Athens that followed Pericles' speech, it was the one that ended another Golden Age 2500 years ago, and it was also one of the greatest blunders of Imperialism in recorded history.
