Josh, I Could be wrong but I think the reason you have very few basements is you don't get the frost deep in the ground like other places. Up here we can build on a slab BUT the footings for the slab have to be over 4 foot deep or the house will raise in the air and there won't be a door that will close in the place.

Since people here already have to go through that trouble they just dig a little more for head room and pour a full foundation with a floor. I have a decent size ranch house and the basement alone is 2250 square feet. I can heat it, put in a toilet and sink, wet bar or a whole kitchen if I want to. You get the idea.

BTW, Concrete cost me $125 a yard when I built a little over a year ago. That is material and labor.
