NEWS: Honduras to Withdraw Soldiers From Iraq Early, AFP Reports

quote.bloomberg.com

April 19 (Bloomberg) -- Honduran President Ricardo Maduro said his country will withdraw its 368-soldier deployment from Iraq as soon as possible, Agence France-Press reported.

``Today I have spoken with the members of the coalition and other friendly countries, and have decided to withdraw the Honduran troops in Iraq,'' Maduro said in Tegucigalpa, as cited by the news agency.

The U.S. government had earlier asked Honduras about its intentions following the decision by Spain to withdraw its deployment from Iraq as soon as possible. Honduran soldiers had been scheduled to stay until July.

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero, 43, in his first policy statement after being sworn in Saturday, said Sunday the country's soldiers deployed in Iraq return to Spain ``in the least time and with the most security possible.'' The withdrawal will take place several months earlier than expected.
