Based on my degree in...ahem..."physics appreciation" and some of those long forgotten 14 courses, I say "no way" to fission. Maybe fusion. On another day, I will a relate a personal anecdote. For I was very close to Ground Zero for the "almost" 9-11 of Nuclear Energy....Three Mile Island. But even before, I was forced to put aside my childish hopes of uranium and technology as savior. Let me tell a small somewhat unrelated story...One day in the middle of the crisis, I got into a cab. The driver, like everyone in the region, was concerned that radiation might be getting to him. So I pulled out my cheap pocket dosimeter and discussed how it worked, how radiation would knock charge off the plate and make the needle move etc. I showed him that, at least since I had charged it, there had been no perceptible radiation present. He handed it back, said thanks, and without a blink "You know where I can get a thousand of those?".
