My dad was as close to a pacifist as an old soldier could get. He loathed war- and would have gone to war only if we were really attacked, by an identifiable country- he would have been sickened by Iraq, just as he was sickened by Vietnam.

I miss my father tremendously. He was always such a straight shooter. A total atheist (made more firmly an atheist by the war)- and it always made me laugh when people would say there are no atheists in foxholes. I used to say "Dad, why not just be an agnostic?" But he'd just shake his head. He was pretty darn sure there was no God- and after what he saw in the war, I certainly can't blame him for that- and he never minded that I was just an agnostic. It used to bug my mom, but never my dad.
