Unbundling is step in same good strategy - Corel NOT dumping Java.
Maybe I missed something, but to me the published strategy does not seem new or strange. In the first place Corel is not dumping Java at all, on the contrary, I think if I read carefully: techstocks.com and: techstocks.com Corel is expandig Java effort.
Unbundling is a logical step if you are serious with Java, I think. The large monolythic office suites are a thing from the past, when this was the only way to provide a seemless integrated set of office tools. With Java, object technology and a software factory approach it is possible to develop the whole suite as separate objects, applets or beans. The advantages are numerous; here a some: 1. the user does not have to load everything, but only the objects (applets, beans) required for the task (s)he or the document needs to perform at a certain instant. 2. Corel can sell every bean separately and so earn a lot more 3. It is very easy to sell office suite parts separately by e-commerce. The way I see it the Corel Office Suite for Java was a nice excercise an eye opener for the media and the competition. It is a normal step in development, as we learn from history, that new inventions are first brought in combination with old environments and ideas. Remenber the first automobile was nothing but a horse cart with the horse missing and a motor in the trunk. Implementing monolythic suites in Java seems to me a similar step.
