it's natural but misleading to judge by personal anecdote. all you have to do is look at the consumer reports reliability records. year after year, almost all American cars are black circles for BAD and Japanese cars are red circles for GOOD, especially if you look at the best makers, Toyota and Honda. it's really quite simple. you can read all about it in the new book "The End of Detroit" which explains why American cars suck and Japanese cars are so good.

Japanese cars tend to be smaller than GM cars in the same class, yet they cost almost $10k

stop and think about this a minute: Japanese cars cost more because they are BETTER. in spite of the higher costs, Japanese makers CONTINUE to take market share from American makers. this is because consumers in the real world decide quality is worth the price.

do you have any understanding of where US carmakers make the bulk of their money? here's a hint: it's not off their "high quality" cars.
