ASML chief sees backlog possibly growing
Wednesday April 21, 11:01 am ET

AMSTERDAM, April 21 (Reuters) - Dutch chip equipment maker ASML (Amsterdam:ASML.AS - News; NasdaqNM:ASML - News) said on Wednesday it saw its order backlog to remain strong and possibly grow in the second quarter.
"The upturn continues. Momentum continues. At the end of Q2 it's reasonable that we expect to have a backlog at least of the same size and possibly higher as (end-)Q1," Chief Executive Doug Dunn said in an analysts conference call.

ASML's backlog at end-Q1 was 163 systems.

The company earlier on Wednesday reported first-quarter profits and sales that fell short of forecasts but said new orders were flowing in strongly in a booming market.

ASML is the world's largest maker of semiconductor lithography machines which map out electronic circuits on silicon wafers. It competes with Japan's Nikon Corp (Tokyo:7731.T - News) and Canon Inc (Tokyo:7751.T - News).

ASML's customers include the world's largest chip maker Intel Corp (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (Taiwan:2330.TW - News), the world's largest contract chip maker.
