Rube,

RE: "Last American car I had was ten years ago and it cost me a mint."

My experience with American cars has been highly mixed. I own 2 GM cars from the '70s and they are incredibly good.

From the '80s I have owned 2 GM cars and 1 Ford. All were highly problematic, with serious quality issues. This is the decade which "did in" GM and Ford, IMHO. The cars' quality was atrocious.

I haven't owned any domestics since, but know of relatives who have owned 2 GM cars from the last 5 years and quality has been a serious issue.

I have also owned 1 Honda and 1 Nissan and they have been great.
