WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004-- National Geographic Ultimate Explorer host Lisa Ling dives more than 1,600 feet to the bottom of the Atlantic aboard a high-tech submersible, investigating the 138-year-old wreck of the S.S. Republic, a Civil War-era steamship that sank carrying a fortune in gold and silver coins. From the moment of the discovery until now, National Geographic cameras have been on hand to capture this dramatic story. Premiering Sunday, April 25, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MSNBC, Ultimate Explorer's "Lost Gold of the Republic" take viewers on a journey of archaeology, adventure, perseverance and a treasure that could be worth more than $100 million.

"National Geographic has a long history of covering this kind of expedition and has been there every step of the way covering the Odyssey Republic Expedition," said David Royle, executive vice president of National Geographic Ultimate Explorer and senior vice president for production at National Geographic Television & Film. "National Geographic has covered classic expeditions like Titanic and Bismarck, making us uniquely qualified to tell the remarkable story of the Republic."

Ling's deep-sea journey represents the culmination of a long and challenging effort by underwater explorers Greg Stemm and John Morris, business partners at Odyssey Marine Exploration (AMEX:OMR - News), who have spent more than 12 years searching for the treasure-laden ship. For 138 years, the Republic and its lost cargo of riches represented every explorer's dream -- but it was the dedication and hard work of Stemm, Morris and the Odyssey team that eventually led to its discovery.
