A few random observations.
Chronology: On Tuesday the 15th Tony was in Florida with his family, attending the funeral of Scott Helvenston. Apparently he had permission to go, given that he posted about it the next day. Where was he when he made that post? Florida, New York, California?
Question: Let's assume he'd made up his mind to do a flit. Why didn't he do it while in Florida, and take his family with him? He coulda been in a Caribbean tax haven within a couple of hours. And given that he has dual citizenship, he could have turned in his US passport and retained his Egyptian nationality. That would very likely have made it far easier for him to resist extradition.
He didn't do that. Presumably his family returned home. Did he go with them, or move on to NYC? He didn't post at all on Thursday the 15th. Was that when he was meeting with his attorneys?
We don't know. But by Friday afternoon he was back on the boards. He was arrested less than 24 hours later. Yet in the posts he doesn't seem nervous, angry, unhappy, or excited. In his last message, he says:
Dirks should be in jail,,but for some reason is walking free.... we shall soon......????
The most obvious interpretation of that remark would be that he was looking forward to his trial, and was optimistic about the outcome.
Then the next day he's arrested pulling an absolutely idiotic stunt. WHY?
If we assume that he was indeed planning to go on the lam, why did he choose this moment? Anyone who's followed Martha's Via Crucis knows that if you're convicted you get to go home for a few months to await sentencing. And of course Tony's well-aware of this, given that he's been convicted once before. In that case, the sentencing followed quickly on the trial, but he then went home and didn't have to check in to slam for several months.
So why flee before the trial? Why not wait to see if he was exonerated, and THEN do it, if that was his intention?
I just don't get it. |
