Today during our choral competition, I was watching two of our girls signing back and forth (they weren't allowed to talk). I asked later how they happened to have learned sign and was nonplussed to learn that they are taking it to fulfill their foreign language requirement.
I certainly have nothing against learning sign; I think it's wonderful. But to add it as an acceptable substitute for French or Spanish strikes me as-- well, you fill in the negatives.
Mine was not a popular opinion.
Is this something peculiar to our district, or to Texas, or is it a national movement?
