I recognize that there were many interviews, statements,
etc.

I am specifically referring to the hearsay claims of
rapes, cutting off ears, and other torture
during his 1971 testimony.

My questions stand: Were these claims ever substantiated,
and if not, has he ever retracted them?

I am well aware that he also referred to some of his own
activities as "atrocities" in contravention of the
Geneva conventions, etc. I also knows he blames
the leadership, not the soldiers for this.

I would have been impressed had he taken a stand
against such alleged activities when he was in
the military and allegedly being directed to commit
such acts.

Is there any evidence that he did so?
If there is, I've not seen it.

It's a matter of credibility.

My take on Kerry is that he's an opportunist.
He needed a platform from which to launch his
political career after he returned from Vietnam
and decided that the VVAW and protest movement
would be his vehicle.

This is a man who planned to be President from his youth.

During his testimony before Congress one of the
Senators even expressed the hope that Kerry would
someday be a member of that body.

Kerry does not have a remarkable record as a Senator.
No major legislation bears his name. He consistently
looked for other issues that could give him some visibility.
He's had difficulty defining himself for the public and
this is likely borne of the lack of any really heartfelt beliefs, as opposed to
opportunistic embracing of issues du jour.

In short, as the presumptive nominee, he's just
the default candidate since everyone else seems to
have imploded or otherwise lost steam.

I will admit that I was turned off by Kerry
months ago after I researched his VVAW and related
activities. Nothing I've seen to date has changed my
initial negative impression of the man.
