Now we're getting somewhere... Even you are recognizing how difficult it is for Sharon to claim these settlements are "crucial" to Israel's security..

Fine Gush Etzion and Givat Zeev.. I believe I already mentioned that I could see retaining those settlements...

Maale Adumim cannot extend any further east, IMO.. It cannot be permitted to nearly bisect Palestine in the same manner the Israeli complained the entire West Bank does for Israel.

Hebron may be a mistake, because it's not a big population center, but religious Jews are terribly attached to the place (it's the second holiest city in Judaism),

Sure it's a holy place.. But it's indefensible and surrounded by Palestinian population centers. How will they defend it?

Israel and the US should still send the message (which they do), that the Pals can come negotiate if they don't like it, but not with suicide bombers.

But that's not what they did.. Sharon has officially committed himself to holding onto Hebron.. Should he renege on that, it will be even more politically damaging.

Message: terror works great!

Apparently it does in Gaza... Because Sharon said he was going to pull completely out of there... So how does that differ from the "weakness" Sharon would be showing by giving up Hebron and Ariel?

You really want to send that message?

The message I want to see sent is "screw you... we're moving back, taking some defensible territory and we're building a wall and never letting you "bastards" in again.. And if you choose to attack us in the future, your entire country is a "free-fire zone".. The future is now completely in your hands, but we're not going to sit back and take your aggression sitting down.

That's pretty much the message I would like to send.
