That's easy. Our real enemy after WWII was The Soviet Union. You know, Crazy Ronnie's Evil Empire. They got into a George Dumbya Bush type quagmire in Afghanistan, and we decided to help the "freedom fighters", like Osama. If the Soviets were otherwise engaged, it made America safer. Of course, killing them was one thing. Refusing to go to the Moscow Olympics was another, and Carter went too far on that score. But it was all part of winning The Cold War, which Ronnie Babe then said all happened because of him. Carter knew that Osama and the other mojo hah deans were not good guys. But he also knew they were never a threat to the peace of the United States. Big Nuke Russia was.
