Three youngsters killed by Israelis

GAZA CITY: Two young Palestinian girls and a teenager were killed yesterday while another 30 Palestinians were shot and wounded during an Israeli incursion in Beit Lahiya area of northern Gaza, Palestinian medical sources said.

Mona Abu Tabak, nine, died in hospital after being shot in the chest, while four-year-old Asmaa Abu Kleyk, died of tear-gas inhalation inside her room, said Dr Mahmoud Alaa Assala at nearby Jabalya hospital.

A 16-year-old Palestinian was also killed during the Israeli army operation and some 30 others were shot and wounded, the hospital sources said.

In a separate incident Israeli troops shot dead three wanted Palestinian militants yesterday in the West Bank town of Tulkarm, Palestinian medical sources said. All three were from the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

One of the militants had been shot at close range in the head and stomach, medics said. It was unclear whether the men were armed at the time of the shooting.

Palestinian security sources said soldiers opened fire at stone-throwing demonstrators as they were withdrawing from Beit Lahiya after an incursion launched on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat expelled 20 wanted militants from his compound yesterday out of fear Israel planned to break in and snatch them, a further sign that Arafat worries he might be Israel's next target.

Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon backed away from his promise to honour a Likud Party vote on a withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, senior government officials said, as polls showed shrinking support for the plan.
