I think the shift has largely occurred as most of the progressive labor platform of the Left has been implemented. The 40 hour workweek, overtime, child labor laws, worker safety laws, etc. were the original draw of "the People" to the Left. "The People" are generally conservative, and the labor base of the Left - the working poor - tend to be the most social conservative. So I believe there may be a case to be made that as the Left's reformist platform became enacted throughout the 20th century, they lost by succeeding.
