There has never been a President that hasn't claimed he prayed for guidance. Why would anyone be shocked and frightened by the idea now?

I see this issue is still around after several days so I'll take a shot at it. You mention praying for guidance. M mentioned praying for strength. I don't thing there's anything remotely scary about either of those, either. Even the non-religious among us go through similar meditative processes when there is something challenging going on in our lives so that's within our comfort zones.

Likewise, his routinely framing things in terms of God is not scary. Annoying, maybe, but not shocking. Religious people look at the gifts we have and attribute them to God. We, too, may even call them "blessings." Nothing shocking about any of that. Nothing shocking even when people do good or noble or heroic things in the name of God to those of us who do them for other reasons.

What is different about this President, or what appears might be different or at least disconcertingly close to some scary line, is the notion that God has sent Bush on a mission. This is a notion that keeps popping up. Whether it's being interpreted correctly or not, I don't know. But you asked what is shocking and scary so I'm offering an explanation. A President emulating Joan of Arc is most definitely outside the comfort zone.

Praying is a non-problem.

P.S. In the interests of full disclosure an avoiding misunderstanding, I'm a big fan of Joan of Arc. She is my patron saint, chosen by me at confirmation.
