McCain was offered the chance to leave the POW camp but he declined and stayed with his soldiers. That stay cost him 3 more years (or so) in a POW camp. Kerry took the fast track out as soon as he could. While Kerry may be a hero its a lot easier to admire him as such when he isn't telling you he's a hero in every interview.
