Bush and Kerry tied in the "purple" states at 49% each.
Now come the "purple" states. On political maps of America, the 14 states that went Democratic in 2000 by more than 5 percent of the vote are colored blue, while the 24 GOP wins are red.
The remaining 12 states, dubbed "purple" by Gallup Poll statisticians, could well decide the election. They include Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
In recent polls, President Bush trounces Kerry - 62 percent to 33 percent - in red states. The Bush-Cheney ticket loses - 57 percent to 41 percent - in the blues. And the purples? A dead tie at 49 percent each.
