I am not sure if you are making an argument since I agree with you on Java not being the main reason for SUNW's rise! Sun has been using Java as means to push its hardware side of business (namely servers, and soon to take off, its NCs, etc.). In order to sell hardware you first have to have the entire industry (or at least most of it) agree with the computing model your hardware is best suited for to run. In order for Sun to sell servers it must convince the industry to follow a server centric, thin client computing model, and Java is the key to the success of this computing model.
