I vaguely recall something along the lines of the towers being closed briefly just before 9/11, but I don't recall where I saw it and if memory serves me correctly, it struck me as being from a less than reliable source.

It's the kind of item I tend to make a mental note of in the event there is eventually corroborating accounts to back it up. It seems a little strange to me that if this were true, there aren't quite a few articles on the subject, at least from the less than mainstream investigative reporters if nothing else. Wouldn't there be records of who the contractors were, along with some details on the project? And wouldn't there be quite a few 9/11 family members comparing notes on that sort of thing?

Even if such a project did take place, it's a bit of a stretch to assume a connection to the destruction of the buildings. Not that it couldn't have been, just that there isn't an obvious connection.

Of course a real investigation would have eliminated the guess work in the first 30 days. The steel would have been examined for evidence of cutting charges. Demolition experts would have been brought in to analyze where cutting charges would have to be placed to do the job. A whole lot of investigators would have been crunching a ton of information on who was coming and going from the buildings, and who had access to the tools of the trade. Unfortunately, none of that ever happened.
