I had heard that too, and that may have played a part in the angry reaction, but it doesn't seem to account for all of it. I was struck by the difference between the reaction of the Japanese government and people to these Japanese "useful idiots" (if that's what they were) and the American reaction to ours. The Japanese don't give a damn about the former hostages' motives.
