Yes. War is risky business, and there is the possibility that the outcome will not be good. This was true in Grenada just as it is now in Iraq. It is, after all, war.
That said, intelligent people don't think about the war in the context you've presented it. WAR ALWAYS LOOKS HORRIBLE WHEN YOU'RE IN THE MIDST OF IT. Using your formula, we would never be able to finish one; it would always be necessary to bail out before the job is finished. (YOU MAY HAVE HEARD IT BEFORE, "WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH THE TOUGH GET GOING"? THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT WAR).
Bush's approach to this war was sensible before it began, and that is the true test. Unless you're willing to say to Al Qaeda, "We fought, you won, we surrender", leaving Iraq today would be the wrong thing to do. I'm not willing, and fortunately, the vast majority of Americans (and Iraqis) see it the same way. |
