Fascinatin! I'm not an engineer or telecom professional, so this is all Star Trek to me...

I recall in the 2000 era that BKHM's strength was supposed to be that it could use OLD silicon-fabs -- too old to make current traditional semiconductors. Now BKHM seems to be moving in an exotic semi-conductor direction (Indium phosphide, gallium arsenide) (both may be spelled wrong).

Isn't the kick of those materials that they can change electricity into light? And maybe visa versa?

Potentially a way to mix optical and electronic components on the same chip, maybe.
