Technology goes unused

Technology is coming to the U.S.-Mexico border - but not all of it is being utilized.

The federal government is spending millions of dollars to install high-tech scanners at major ports of entry. The scanners electronically scan digitized fingerprints and photographs embedded on new laser visas, giving authorities the ability to keep track of people authorized to enter the country.

But federal officials say laser visas will be only spot-checked, because they fear causing major delays along the border.

And that undermines a 1996 law that established the laser visas because older ones were easy to counterfeit.

The money has been spent. The technology is in place. Now it must be used to bolster security along the nation's southern border.
