cnyndwlir (is that Welsh?), you are responding to an argument I didn't make. I was not arguing that we could have won the war if only so-and-so. I don't know enough about the subject to have an opinion on it.

What I was saying, is to avoid viewing the current world through 20/20 hindsight. The arguments for getting us into Vietnam look bad because we lost the war. That doesn't mean all of the original arguments were invalid and should have been ignored. The USSR was aggressive and our interests did require that it be contained; if we avoided war in Vietnam it might have greatly encouraged Soviet opportunism there & elsewhere. That's speculation, but not idle for our case.

Action has costs. So does inaction. And you are never told what would have happened had you chosen the other path.

These people will fight and will fight to the death.

Far too simplistic. Some are fighting, mostly the Sunni who are the losers from the fall of Saddam and Al Qaeda jihadis; but most Iraqis have been well-trained to passivity under Saddam. Current polls show that the Iraqis do not want the Americans to leave soon, and believe their lives are getting better.

If you believe in killing millions for some benefit that escapes me

Killing millions? Where did I say that? I believe in killing Saddamite thugs who are trying to kill our soliders, very selectively, and help the jihadis find their much-desired shehada. No talk of millions.
