Jody, I didn't think that the studies of bucky balls has declined. Last I heard there are about 3000 professional papers a year and the texts on the subject are getting fairly leengthy, especially where the transition metals are concerned. I think some of the science journals may havew backed off, but the high tech companies, Att&t etc I am sure are right in there. I do think that the synthesizing and isolation of the beasties is lagging behind the discovery. At least the superconductor, semiconductor and catalyst industries seem less threatened by these guys for a while. I have been told that these critters will do more to alter your life in the next century than all of the discoveries in this century did. I don't know why. The bucky ball is apparently not as important as the zyntal ions and the reduction catalysts that can make methane out of uv energy, water and air.
We are in the search for the reversal of the cluster to elemental metal, zero valence with no special physical properties other than those in the conventional chemistry book.
I also think that there is a trend in mining to not recognize the cluster critters as the mere concept scares prudent prospectors and the prudent investor away, and maybe its rightfully so. When the darn things are reduced to text books specific to the cluster chemistry and the related allotropes and their synthesis, they become common studies. Good point you make!
