"In the beginning, some people thought the Americans were helping them," Mubarak told the French newspaper Le Monde. "There was no hatred toward Americans." But "after what has happened in Iraq, there is an unprecedented hatred."

He said what he (correctly) expects Le Monde wants to hear and print is all. I've read other interviews he's given in the French press and it was always the same thing.

He'll juggle promoting anti-American sentiment and crackdowns on actual terrorist activity on Egyptian soil as necessary to stay in power.

One thing is clear, if there were a popular vote in Egypt today Islamist demagogue extremists would win on One Man, One Vote, One Time, as is the case in most any Arabic country. The results would be catastrophic as one look at what has resulted in so many African states when demagogues come to power has shown, but this is the way it is right now.
