Why? Such gain would be extraordinary and not considered for
purposes of comparison with earnings estimates.

By that same token, if there was a loss, surely they would want
to get it out of the operating net EPS.

That is such nonsense! The AOL-TALK deal is a straightforward advance against commissions. The SEC simply opined that AOL was recognizing more than it should have. The Internet has nothing to do with it. BTW, the AOL-TALK agreement was filed by TALK along with their 1996 10K. It's on EDGAR.

What with the complexity of deals done in traditional media,(e.g. by Disney, TCI, etc.), it is preposterous to claim that the Internet is producing deals with basic business terms that have never before been seen in the history of the planet.
