Korea Outpaces China in Inflation

By Kim Jae-kyoung
Staff Reporter
South Korea showed one of the world's highest consumer price inflation rates in the first quarter of the year, fueled by soaring raw material prices and high wages.

According to the Bank of Korea (BOK), the nation's consumer prices increased 3.4 percent in January, 3.3 percent February and 3.1 percent in March from a year ago, bringing the first-quarter figure to 3.3 percent.

The quarterly inflation rate is the fourth highest among 27 countries the central bank tracks, following the Philippines (3.4 percent), Indonesia (4.6 percent) and Brazil (6.8 percent).

Korea is ahead of China and Argentina in the consumer price index in the first quarter of this year.
