as the attack in Basra shows, this is in fact the soft underbelly of Western economic security - the oil terminals throughout the ME. surely this fact is not lost on OBL and his ilk. imagine if they were to manage to shut down the main Saudi terminal Ras Tanura for instance - it would be an economic catastrophe. note that Saudi Arabia has several very vulnerable spots ( no doubt they are well guarded, but still... ) . they use customized pipeline parts that are not easy to replace ( i.e. if they were damaged, there are no 'off-the-shelf' replacement parts - they have to be custom built to fit ) . imo there's a grave danger here, as the Islamist militants have stepped up their operations in Saudi Arabia in response to the government's recent crack-down. previously, it is said that the Saudi establishment paid extortion money to the fundamentalists to keep them at bay. they may still be doing so, and the fundamentalists may actually be reluctant to damage the oil infrastructure on account of wanting to take it over one day. but the truce seems increasingly shaky. it is hard to gauge what kind of cost-benefit anlyses the radicals are engaging in. after all, these are not the most rational people on the planet - they even tend to blow themselves up for their cause.
