Augustus, you show the outrage of an idealist. I used to be more of an idealist but reality got in the way. When people do the kinds of things that the U.N. people did, I'm not surprised at all. In fact you need look no farther than what's going on with our own people in Iraq to see the same profiteering, the same lack of principles and the same corruption. You do see that, don't you? My cynicism is what prevents me from believing the tall tales that the Bush Administration has told from the start in Iraq. I like to look at what makes sense as opposed to what people say. From that point of view I don't care what Rumsfeld, the military generals or the Bush people say about Iraq. I don't care what Kerry says either. I just try to read between the lines. The "small events" that you think the media is blowing out of proportion are not small at all. When you have the signals that the Iraqis on the street are sending, when you have the thunderous silence of the Iraqi clerics regarding the insurgency and when the area of resistance and scope of resistance is enlarging, then you have the rumbling on the tracks and the train is coming. You can shut your eyes, plug your ears and sing out loud but it's still coming. Remember that if you're in a room with 100 people and 90 of them sort of favor you but not enough to risk injury protecting you, and the other 10 of them are willing to die to kill you, you better get out of the room. Those are the realities and I've stayed alive a few times by seeing things as they are, not as I wished they were. In fact it got to be a habit with me. I don't know if you're the kind of person that let's their strong patriotism and love for America interfere with their ability to analyze things when events are not going our way, but if you are you should know that's a dangerous tendency to have in our leaders and in those of us who choose them.
