You're 100% wrong, the negative campaign started on rightwing talk radio years ago. It also began in 2002 with the Bushies using the made-up Iraq War to brand Dems as un-American weaklings and even traitors. Anne Coulter led the way on the "Every Dem is a traitor" attack.

With seemingly the least to lose, Howard Dean began fighting back after the Dems endured tons of negative dishonesty. As a group, led by Dean, they finally realized it was OK to roll up their sleeves and swing their fists back. Bush was bloodied. But Bushies had been asking for it for a long-long time.

The negative attacks continue in the rightwing media non-stop and truth is the real victim. Normally, the Dems try to stay above the fray and wage a more honest, gentlemanly campaign. But sometimes you have to get dirty if you're fighting a greased pig that lives in the mud. Enron's Ed Gillespie is a notorious mud-slinging and professional liar. He's running the negative attacks now, feeding Hannity and Limbaugh daily, using drudge to release otherwise unreleaseable smear stories, etc.
